Three Ukrainian amputees have made history by swimming across the Strait of Bonifacio, which separates the southern part of French Corsica and the northern part of Italian Sardinia, a total distance of 12.8 kilometers.
This feat was reported by the ONE TEAM FORCES public organization, which supports military personnel and veterans.
The swim was supposed to start in the morning, but due to difficult weather conditions — heavy rain, thunder and lightning — the team had to temporarily return to shore. After the weather improved, the swimmers started at 8:36 a.m. The marathon water distance ran from the rocks of Corsica to the rocks of Sardinia. In difficult conditions, amid strong currents and unpredictable weather changes, the veteran team showed a result of 4 hours 50 minutes and finished fourth among the seven participating teams.
The Bonifacio Strait swim is considered an official open water marathon distance. It is the first time in history that a team of veteran amputees has completed it. Their achievement is not only an athletic breakthrough, but also a powerful symbol of endurance, courage, and rehabilitation through sport.
