The European Solidarity and Holos factions have been blocking an important decision of the Verkhovna Rada for over a year, which could have significantly affected Ukraine's energy security and reduced the tariff burden on citizens. This was stated by political expert Petro Oleschuk, commenting on the failed agreement on the purchase of nuclear reactors in Bulgaria.
“Paradoxically, those who shout the most about the 'catastrophe for wallets' are the ones who systematically block solutions that could protect these same wallets,” Oleschuk noted.
These are two nuclear reactors that Bulgaria was ready to sell to Ukraine. These installations were planned to be used to complete power units No. 3 and No. 4 of the Khmelnytskyi NPP. If implemented, Ukraine would receive 2.2 GW of stable, cheap electricity.
The political scientist emphasizes that the blocking was for political reasons, while for citizens it means the loss of potentially cheaper light and heat.
“Know: for the EU and Holos, Ukraine's interests are just a backdrop for the rating. Not your bills. Not your energy. Not your security,” he added.
The situation is complicated by the fact that Bulgaria is currently reconsidering its intentions. Due to its own energy needs and geopolitical instability in the region, Sofia may refuse to transfer the reactors. The final decision must be made by the Bulgarian parliament.
Recall that only in February 2025 did the Verkhovna Rada pass a law allowing the purchase of reactors. However, according to Oleschuk, due to the time lost, the deal may no longer take place.
