This summer, Ukraine may experience a shortage of electricity due to the loss of capacity. This was announced by the CEO of Yasno, Serhiy Kovalenko, during the broadcast of the “United News” telethon. According to him, DTEK lost half of its generating capacity as a result of the missile attack that occurred on March 22.
“Various types of generating capacities were damaged, many thermal power plants were affected, and a hydroelectric power plant was also damaged. In addition, the enemy attacked Ukrenergo network nodes, transformer substations, etc. several times. These attacks not only affected the system’s ability to transmit electricity, but also reduced our overall generating capacity,” Kovalenko explained. He added that restoring the damaged capacities would take many months.
In particular, the severely damaged Dnipro Hydroelectric Power Plant in Zaporizhia, which was hit by a missile, will be difficult to restore quickly. It may take 18 to 24 months to restore some of its units.
It should be noted that the massive missile attack by the Russian occupiers on Ukrainian energy facilities on the morning of March 22 became the largest in the entire 2023/24 heating season.
