Teachers in Kyiv and Odessa have begun receiving monthly salary supplements financed by local budgets. Each of these cities has a different approach to the supplements, but the goal is the same — to support teachers and ensure a decent level of income for education workers.
The capital's authorities have allocated 2.4 billion hryvnias to increase salaries for educators. This was announced by Valentyn Mondryivskyi, deputy head of the Kyiv City State Administration. Teachers receive a 30% bonus on their official salary, depending on their qualification category.
At this point, additional payments have already been paid to teachers in Holosiivskyi, Desnyanskyi, Dniprovskyi, Obolonskyi, Podilskyi, Svyatoshynskyi, and Solomyanskyi districts. In the Pecherskyi district, only preschool and after-school education workers have received financial support so far, but the authorities promise that the situation will be corrected in the near future.
"Kyiv fulfills its obligations by providing funding and support for teachers. We understand that we cannot change the rate, because it depends on the state, but we are creating a bonus system that will become monthly starting in 2025," Mondryivskyi explained.
In Odessa, a decision was also made on monthly additional payments to educators, for which the local authorities have allocated over 220 million hryvnias. Director of the Department of Education and Science of the Odessa City Council Olena Buynevych noted that the payments are divided into categories:
- Teachers, educators and pedagogues : 2000 hryvnias.
- Education staff (librarians, doctors, laboratory assistants, cooks) : 1,000 hryvnias.
- Young specialists : 3,000 hryvnias, like last year.
It is expected that educators will receive the first increases with their April salaries, but the city government is working to speed up the process.
“Deputies are already discussing the issue in order to make a decision earlier, perhaps at the spring session,” Buinevich noted.
The decision of Kyiv and Odessa to join the initiative to increase teachers' incomes has become a good example for other regions. Decent conditions for teachers are not only a support for their work, but also an investment in the development of the future generation.
In conditions of martial law, ensuring stability in the educational sector becomes even more important, and additional funds will help teachers feel more confident.
