Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko announced that commissioning work has been completed on the renovated section of the tunnel between the Demiivska and Lybidska stations. Full train service between the Heroiv Dnipra and Teremky stations will resume on September 12.
The repair lasted 9 months and included a wide range of works. The construction site was prepared, over 200 cable networks were laid, including from DTEK and Ukrtelecom. The old part of the tunnel, 27 meters long, was dismantled, and a new section, over 50 meters long, was built in its place. New tracks were installed, all engineering networks were restored, and train safety systems were adjusted.
Klitschko noted that during the repair, complex hydrogeological conditions were taken into account, which required waterproofing of the tunnel lining and chemical consolidation of the soil. The total estimated cost of the work was UAH 383 million, which is UAH 62 million less than the initial cost.
The mayor also reported that during the restoration work, expert studies were conducted to determine the causes of the problems with the tunnel. It turned out that the main reasons were design errors and poor-quality construction work. The tunnel was designed for a lower groundwater level, and violations in the quality of the installation of the rings and the lack of necessary compensatory measures were also identified.
The studies confirmed gross violations during construction, in particular the lack of chemical consolidation of the soils around the tunnel.
