US President Donald Trump is considering a new indirect military assistance scheme to Ukraine: according to AXIOS sources, it is about the sale of American weapons to NATO Allies, with the condition that they will transfer it to Kiev.
According to sources close to the Trump administration, this model was discussed during a recent NATO summit. The essence of the idea - Washington sells weapons to the Alliance countries without fixing its ultimate use, and already allies decide independently whether to transfer it to Ukraine.
" The US President supplies NATO defense weapons. NATO can decide what to do with it. We do not supply weapons to Ukraine ," Axios quotes one of US officials.
According to the interlocutors, not only defense but also offensive weapons are considered in the scheme - that is, weapons that were transferred to Baiden administrations restricted or delayed.
One of the European officials with whom the publication spoke has confirmed the fact of the discussion, but stressed that there is no final plan or formal approval. It is also unknown when such a scheme can be started and to what extent.
The idea of indirect weapons makes it possible to formally avoid direct US supplies to Ukraine, but at the same time do not leave Kiev without support - at least at the level of allies.
In addition, AXIOS reports that Trump studies variants of new sanctions against Russia, in particular the package proposed by the Senator-Republican Lindsey Grame. However, the White House representative said that Trump would sign the document only if they receive "100% flexibility" in the issue of imposing and canceling sanctions. In other words, it insists on full control over the restriction mechanism.
