A third of Ukrainians live in poverty

The number of Ukrainians living in poverty has increased significantly, reaching 9 million. This is 1.8 million more than in 2020.

These data were made public by the regional director of the World Bank in Eastern Europe, which indicates a significant deterioration of the economic situation in the country.

According to him, the total number of poor people in the country is now 29% of the total population. The point is that the Russian invasion continues to destroy the country's economy.

At the same time, the situation could be much worse if Ukraine had not been allocated support from the foreign budget in order to be able to pay pensions to the elderly and salaries to teachers and doctors.

The main reason for the increase in poverty is the reduction of employment: more than a fifth of adults who worked before the war lost their jobs.

Special aid in the form of resources for social spending was able to stabilize the situation a little and prevent another three million people from falling into poverty.

It is important to add that currently the population of Ukraine is about 32 million people.
