The recent meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has become the subject of a scandal. According to Thomas Jaeger, a professor of international politics at the University of Cologne, the incident was staged to publicly humiliate the Ukrainian president.
Thomas Jaeger, in a comment for Bild, explained that everything was specially organized by Donald Trump and his Vice President J.D. Vance. They used this meeting to shamelessly humiliate Zelensky. The professor believes that one of the main goals of this situation was to show the public humiliation of the Ukrainian president to the whole world through live broadcast. “First they teased him, and then they bit him,” Jaeger emphasized.
The analyst noted that Trump is trying to show Americans that Ukraine is not grateful for the help and, therefore, does not deserve further support from the United States. Trump supporters have already supported this position, but the rest of the Americans are not yet ready for this turn of events, Professor Yeager argues.
Yeager also noted that Trump's policy on Ukraine is part of a larger strategy that includes rapprochement with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. He emphasized that Trump considers Putin his friend, but in reality the Russian leader is only using him to achieve his goals. This course, Yeager believes, could lead to the undermining of the dominant position of the United States on the international stage and the alienation of allies that America has accumulated over the past 80 years.
