Donald Trump's advisor and Russian-born lawyer Boris Epstein may receive a key position as US special envoy for Ukraine in President-elect Trump's administration.
As the New York Times , citing sources close to Trump, Epstein's candidacy was proposed by one of the president's most influential advisers.
Epstein is a lawyer who led Trump's legal defense in criminal cases and championed the idea that the 2020 election, which Biden won, was fraudulent.
He was born in Russia and lived there as a child, he has relatives in both the Russian Federation and Ukraine.
Trump "listened with obvious interest and did not reject the proposal" to appoint Epstein, although he has not yet committed to appointing him, the newspaper writes.
The publication notes that the Republican particularly notes Epstein’s merits and listens to his advice. “Even the richest man in the world, Elon Musk, who was at many of the transition meetings last week, privately noted how surprised he was that Mr. Epstein was given so much power,” the publication writes.
“There is no one in the president-elect’s orbit who currently doubts Epstein’s level of influence. He quickly became one of the most influential figures in the early days of the presidential transition, despite having no formal role in it,” the article says.
In particular, Epstein is alleged to be advising Trump on whom to appoint to the US Department of Justice and was a lobbyist for the nomination of Matt Goetz for the position of Attorney General.
