US President's Special Representative Keith Kellogg said that the war in Ukraine is coming to an end, but the final stage will be "extremely difficult." He said this during a speech at the Ronald Reagan National Defense Forum.
Kellogg compared the current situation on the front with the combat experience of the infantry and marines, where the most difficult part of the operation is the last meters to the target.
" If you are a soldier, you understand that it is in the last 10 meters that the real friction of war manifests itself. I believe that we are in those last 10 meters to the end of the conflict. I think there are only a few questions left ," he said.
According to Kellogg, for the war to move to the final stage, two fundamental issues must be resolved:
-
the status of territories, in particular Donbas, as well as Kherson and Zaporizhia regions;
-
control over the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which still remains one of the main risk areas.
" If these two issues are resolved, the rest will be handled quite well ," the special representative is convinced.
Kellogg also emphasized that the war in Ukraine is significantly different from previous conflicts in terms of the scale of human losses.
" The Soviet Union left Afghanistan after losing 20,000. We left Vietnam after losing 12,000. Russia and Ukraine lost over two million. These are terrible numbers, so we need to end the conflict ," he stressed.
Despite the complexity of the situation, Kellogg expressed his belief that the end of the war was on the horizon.
“ Now we just have to wait and see, but in my opinion the end is really near ,” he added.
