US President Donald Trump, speaking at a joint session of Congress, said the United States is actively working to end Russia's war against Ukraine, Reuters reports.
In his speech, the American leader emphasized that, in his opinion, a full-scale invasion could have been avoided if he had remained in office.
" We are working very hard to end the ninth war, the killing and the slaughter between Russia and Ukraine, where twenty-five thousand soldiers are dying every month. Think about it - twenty-five thousand soldiers a month. A war that would never have happened if I were president ," Trump said.
He did not provide specific details about diplomatic steps or possible negotiation formats, but stressed that ending the fighting remains one of his administration's priorities.
Earlier, US President's special envoy Stephen Witkoff outlined a principled position on a potential peace agreement. According to him, a key condition is guarantees that the conflict will not happen again in the future.
Witkoff noted that the parties must have confidence in security and stability so that citizens can live without the constant threat of renewed war.
At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on reports of a possible new deadline for ending the war, allegedly voiced by Trump. The Ukrainian leader emphasized that Kyiv always advocates for a quick cessation of hostilities.
" As for July 4th, that the US or President Trump wants to end the war, this is new information for me. But if this is the case, I can only support it ," Zelensky noted.
Despite claims of active peace efforts, fighting continues and diplomatic contacts remain difficult. Washington continues to consult with allies and Ukrainian representatives on possible ways to end the war.
Trump's public statements indicate the US administration's intention to increase diplomatic pressure and find mechanisms to end the conflict, but the specific parameters of possible agreements have not yet been disclosed.
