The Ukrainian military, which has to ration ammunition, is forced to monitor politics in Washington, in particular, how aid to Kyiv passes through the American Congress, writes The Wall Street Journal.
"Now we use ammunition only if the situation is critical," Sergeant of the Armed Forces Oleksandr Kucheryavenko told the publication, talking about his grenade launcher mounted on an American Humvee.
As noted in the article, this is precisely why the Ukrainian military suddenly became interested in US politics.
"The lives of our boys depend on" American funding, Kucheryavenko said.
Like many in the Ukrainian military , he is concerned that Republican attempts to block additional aid to Kyiv will deprive them of already scarce ammunition, armored vehicles and spare parts, making it even more difficult to defend against Russian forces.
Earlier, the US Senate approved the financing plan for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan by 70 votes to 29. The bill now heads to the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, where it faces an uncertain fate amid the growing influence of Ukrainian skeptics and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who opposes additional aid to Ukraine.
