Chernihiv police reported the arrest of two men suspected of an attempted bank robbery that took place at the beginning of May. The incident took place in the city center, where attackers tried to blow up the bank to gain access to the depository.
Two men tried to steal the contents of cells in the depository, where more than 5.5 million hryvnias were kept.
To do this, they dug and reinforced a tunnel underground from the basement of a nearby high-rise building, about which the residents had warned the police even before the robbery.
The robbers tried to hide the dismantling of the floor in the bank with a fire.
Two previously convicted men, aged 40 and 42, were detained in the Zaporizhia and Mykolaiv regions.
According to our source in the law enforcement agencies, the pickpockets still managed to steal some of the money.
"They filled the room with combustible materials through the ventilation hole and set it on fire. When the combustible materials ignited, an explosion rang out, after which the building collapsed. After that, the robbers broke into the premises, where they stole part of the money from the storage cells," the source said.
During the arrest, 2.4 million hryvnias, a pistol and 15 kilograms of marijuana were seized from the robbers.
