On the territory of the Chernobyl exclusion zone, the construction of fortifications from materials inside the zone began. This was reported by the radioologist and coordinator of the projects on the humanitarian demining of the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine Elena Phenyuk.
According to her, the use of local materials was a forced step because of the need to ensure the safety of defense forces. Despite the presence of radionuclides in building materials, construction is ongoing.
"Can we ban construction through radionuclides? We must. We must live in a new reality and minimize the possible consequences," the expert explained.
The radiation background in the area remains stable. There are no threats to the civilian population, Pareniuk assures. At the same time, for those who work directly on the facilities, the level of safety is still estimated.
Scientists warn that construction can cause partial raising of radioactive dust, local changes in pollution and environmental impact. Constant monitoring of the situation to minimize the possible negative consequences is planned.
There is no danger for Kyiv residents and other regions - contamination remains localized within the exclusion zone and is controlled by the relevant services.
