The capital is proposing to return Lavrska Street to its historical name in honor of Hetman Ivan Mazepa. This decision is explained by the need to restore historical justice, because Mazepa was not only an outstanding statesman, but also contributed to the development of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.
This was reported by the Kyiv City Council. A corresponding appeal has already been sent to Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko for consideration.
It is worth noting that the modern name - Lavrska - appeared in 2010. Before that, the street already bore the name of Ivan Mazepa, but it was changed by decision of the then authorities.
Why Ivan Mazepa?
Hetman Ivan Mazepa played a key role in the development of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. He financed the construction and restoration of many churches, including the Trinity Gate Church, the Church of All Saints, and also allocated funds for the construction of a new stone bell tower and a large bell for the needs of the Lavra.
“Ivan Mazepa was not only one of the most prominent statesmen in the history of the Ukrainian people, but also a philanthropist who actively built the Lavra,” emphasized Kyiv City Council deputy Olesya Pynzenyk.
This is not the first attempt at renaming. In 2022, Kyiv residents supported a petition, and the initiative was also approved by the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Reserve.
If the decision is made, Kyiv will return the historical name to one of its central streets, paying due tribute to the outstanding Ukrainian hetman.
