Over the last decade, the number of residents of Kiev has increased significantly. According to Olga Altunina, the chairman of the internally displaced persons in the Kyiv City State Administration, as of 2024, about 3.7 million people live in the capital.
For comparison, according to the latest official statistics provided in 2014, the population of Kiev was 2.8 million.
The population assessment in 2024 is based on the analytics of mobile operators and data on internally displaced persons. According to Altunina, 425.6 thousand people in Kiev are displaced persons who came from other regions of Ukraine as a result of war.
The increase in the population of the capital creates new challenges for infrastructure, medicine, housing and social sphere. In addition, at the national level there is a tendency to aging the population, which in combination with migration can exacerbate demographic and economic problems, including the load on the pension system.
However, Kyiv continues to remain the main attraction center for Ukrainians who are looking for a safer environment and more opportunities.
