On May 9, a significant event of international scale will be held in Lviv - signing documents on the creation of a special tribunal to bring the leadership of the Russian Federation to justice for aggression against Ukraine. This was reported by Radio Liberty with reference to the projects of the relevant documents.
The leadership of Ukraine, representatives of the Council of Europe and the ministers of foreign affairs of dozens of countries will join the signing. The documents state that the tribunal is created in order to exercise justice over persons who are most responsible for the crime of aggression against Ukraine, which is one of the main international crimes.
The signatories also urge other countries and international organizations to join the initiative, support the activities of the tribunal, and assist the guilty.
Work on creating this tribunal has been going on since the beginning of 2023. In parallel, an active collection of the evidence base will be conducted, which will be the basis for consideration of cases in the future court.
The tribunal is expected to have an international mandate and special jurisdiction, which will be held accountable not only by performers, but also by the highest leadership of the Russian Federation, which gave orders on armed aggression and systematically violated the rules of international law.
Creating a tribunal is not only a legal step, but also a powerful signal: crimes against peace will not be unpunished, and the global community is ready to restore justice and protect the principles of international law.
