Ukrainian refugees in Germany should receive less financial support, believes the head of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Friedrich Mertz. In his interview with the newspaper Rheinische Post, the politician proposed to change the system of social benefits for this category of persons, in particular to replace "citizen's allowance" ( Bürgergeld ) with more modest payments provided for political asylum seekers.
It should be noted that the CDU is currently the highest rated party in Germany, and Merz may become chancellor based on the results of early elections to the Bundestag, which may take place as early as February.
He called "aid for citizens" "the largest, literally explosive item of expenditure." "We need to put the system on its feet again. The concept of Bürgergeld will disappear, Mertz promised. - We will transfer refugees from Ukraine who are arriving again from "aid for citizens" to aid for political asylum seekers. At the same time, we will immediately grant them a work permit and speed up the process of recognizing their professional qualifications."
Mertz also expressed the opinion that in practice it is much easier to learn a language at work than only at courses, for the opportunity to attend which you sometimes have to wait for weeks.
