Ophthalmologists are on trial in Ternopil, because of which 18 people lost their sight

A scandal broke out in the Ternopil region: four ophthalmologists were on trial for seriously damaging the vision of patients, which led to partial or complete loss of vision in 18 people. According to the prosecutor's office, these doctors probably committed serious professional errors or negligence during medical procedures.

The case was referred to the court. The events took place between March 2022 and February 2023.

According to the investigation, the head of the ophthalmology department of the district hospital sold 18 patients a drug prohibited for use in Ukraine. He ordered three subordinate doctors to administer this drug to people, for which the doctors received from 8 to 34 thousand hryvnias from the patients.

As a result, 15 people lost sight in one eye, 3 – in both eyes. 7 patients had to have their eyes surgically removed.

Precautionary measures in the form of bail were chosen for two defendants, and two are under personal bond.
