The Verkhovna Rada expressed the need to review the energy infrastructure of Ukraine in connection with the increase in attacks on it. Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Energy, Andriy Gerus, in the Ukrainian Radio program on March 29, noted that work is currently underway to create a new component of the energy system. According to him, this involves the development of a wide network of small power plants, which will make them more difficult to potentially attack due to their large number.
Gerus emphasized that energy facilities cannot be hidden, as their location is known by power lines. Therefore, there is active work on changing the architecture of the power grid with the aim of adding more decentralized generators located closer to end consumers.
“Simply put, when we have 5-10 large power plants, they become easy targets for attacks. But if we have hundreds of small power plants located close to consumers, especially in areas with high demand for electricity, attacking them will be practically unheard of or extremely expensive,” Gerus explained.
A key goal is to create a large number of small generators across the country. This is already being implemented through the installation of solar and gas power plants, particularly in urban areas. The new structure of the energy system should ensure its flexibility and reliability, ensuring a stable electricity supply for consumers.
