Draft law No. 12336, which proposes to establish a National Day of Prayer in Ukraine, has been registered in the Verkhovna Rada. This day is planned to be celebrated annually on February 24, the anniversary of the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The project was submitted by a group of deputies headed by David Arakhamia, head of the "Servant of the People" faction. Thanks to the support of a large number of deputies, the initiative has a high chance of being adopted.
According to the plan of the authors, the National Day of Prayer will begin with a special meeting of the Verkhovna Rada, at which the spiritual hymn of Ukraine "God is great, one" will be performed. The Cabinet of Ministers will be required to develop a plan of measures to celebrate this day, including the organization of the all-Ukrainian campaign "Light a candle". Local state administrations should be responsible for holding festive events.
In the explanatory note to the draft law, it is emphasized that on February 24, 2022, Russia began aggression against Ukraine, counting on a quick takeover of the country. However, Ukraine was not only able to resist, but also to give a worthy response to the aggressor, preserving its statehood thanks to the unity and support of the military and the civilian population.
Deputies note that prayer is an important spiritual factor that helped Ukraine endure these difficult times. They believe that joint prayer will provide strength for victory and will become a symbol of the unity of the Ukrainian people.
The idea of a National Day of Prayer is based on historical examples of national prayers that changed the course of history, such as during the Second World War in Great Britain and the United States.
