In Zhytomyr there was an extraordinary event with signs of a terrorist act - on the late evening on May 30, an unknown man blew up a grenade near the ATB supermarket on Peace Avenue. Six people aged 22 to 42 were injured as a result of the explosion. They were all hospitalized with injuries of varying severity.
According to the press service of the National Police of Zhytomyr region, at about 23:30 the police received a report of the explosion. According to eyewitnesses, an unknown man threw an explosive device into a group of people, after which he fled in an unknown direction.
An investigative team, explosives, criminals, SBU staff and strategic investigation management came to the scene. Law enforcement officers are actively searched by the attacker. The territory around the supermarket was fenced, searches and witness surveys were conducted.
Upon the incident, the police opened criminal proceedings under articles attempted to murder two or more persons , committed by a way of life that is dangerous for the lives of many people (Part 2 of Article 15, paragraph 1, 5, 5 of Part 2 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). The sanction provides for a sentence of life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
It should be reminded that a similar incident happened in September 2024 in the city of Lubny of Poltava region, where a man undermined a grenade at the entrance to the supermarket. Then he died on the spot, and three people were injured.
Law enforcement officers are currently finding out the motives and identity of the offender, they do not exclude any of the versions - from a personal conflict to an attempt to destabilize the situation in the region.
