The attack on the oil depot in Klintsy. Why is this one of the biggest fires in Russia at the hands of the Armed Forces

In the Russian city of Klintsi, Bryansk Oblast, one of the largest fires since the beginning of the Russian invasion has been raging for half a day. BBC Ukraine's sources in the security forces called Ukrainian intelligence responsible for the attack.

The governor of the Bryansk region Oleksandr Bogomaz, the Ministry of Defense of Russia and Russian Telegram channels reported on the fire on Friday morning.

According to Bogomaz, the fire was assigned an increased degree of complexity, the local population had to be evacuated - 32 people were evacuated from the private sector.

The area of the fire grew to a thousand square meters, and a fire engine arrived to extinguish it. 13 fire trucks were also used to fight the fire.

a source in the security forces told BBC Ukraine

"The attack on the oil depot in Bryansk region is an operation of the GUR of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine," says the interlocutor.

According to the interlocutor of "Ukrainian Pravda" in the special services, there is "significant damage to the military facility" in Klyntsy.

"Putin has concentrated the most EW and anti-aircraft defense means on the Ukrainian occupied territories, military facilities on the territory of the Russian Federation will continue to be worked on," added the interlocutor of the UP.

According to the BBC's military correspondent Pavlo Aksyonov, the fire at the oil depot near Klintsy is one of the largest in Russia as a result of an attack by the Armed Forces during the invasion.

Usually, after such strikes there were fires in one or more tanks, but this time it is known that four caught fire at once.

A number of Russian military facilities are located near Klintsy, from where the Russians also launched attacks on Ukraine.

How events developed

According to the Russian governor, the fire broke out at dawn after the downing of a Ukrainian drone .

"After the destruction of the air target, ammunition was dropped on the territory of the Klintsiv oil depot," Oleksandr Bogomaz wrote in the Telegram channel.

Prior to this, many posts with photos and videos of a strong fire at an oil depot and huge columns of smoke appeared on the social media pages of the community of the city of Klyntsi, Bryansk region, as well as Bryansk itself (150 km in a straight line from Klyntsi). The BBC has not verified these images.

A few minutes before the first notification to the public about the fire, the Ministry of Defense of Russia wrote, noting that a Ukrainian aircraft-type UAV was shot down over the Bryansk region early in the morning.

In the morning, the Russian news agency TARS reported that the area of the fire had grown from one hundred to one thousand square meters.

The fire has been assigned an increased level of complexity, and hundreds of firefighters are involved in extinguishing it.

A few hours after the first attack, the governor of the region announced that two more Ukrainian drones were shot down over the Pogarsky and Unetsky districts of the region - approximately 80 and 45 kilometers from Klyntsi.

The city of Klintsi is located 50 km from the border with Ukraine. The previous drone attack on the oil depot in Klintsi was in May of last year.

In the last two days, this is the second known attack by Ukrainian drones on an oil depot in Russia. On the night of January 18, the target of the attack was the St. Petersburg oil terminal - the wreckage of the downed drone was found on the territory of the enterprise.

This is the northernmost and farthest point of attack from Ukraine - the Ukrainian authorities reported that the drone that attacked St. Petersburg flew 1,250 kilometers.
