In January 2024, Hungary issued a serious ultimatum to Ukraine related to the rights of the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia, which caused significant diplomatic tensions. Budapest ties the fulfillment of these requirements to the further movement of Ukraine towards membership in the European Union, which causes indignation and discussion both in the international community and among political circles in Ukraine itself.
We publish the contents of the ultimatum:
- Expanding the use of the Hungarian language in education - restoring the status of a "national minority school" if the school has at least one Hungarian class; the choice of the language of instruction for universities and institutions of vocational education and training; the possibility of translating the tasks of the external examination into Hungarian.
- Determining the entire Transcarpathia as the territory of traditional Hungarian residence, even where Hungarians have never lived or lived once and left.
- Abolition of the condition of the presence of 10% Hungarians in order to recognize the territory as "traditionally Hungarian".
- Removal of the restriction on the display of toponyms and geographical names in the Hungarian language, refusal of the mandatory display of information in the Ukrainian language.
- Free use of Hungarian symbols and Hungarian holidays.
- Ensuring the representation of Hungarians in the Verkhovna Rada and permission to speak in the Hungarian language.
