Ukraine has joined the European Union's position on non-recognition of the third "inauguration" of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, which took place on January 10. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga called it a "fiction" and called for respect for the rights and freedoms of Venezuelans.
Despite mass protests and international pressure, Nicolas Maduro began his third presidential term, which will last until 2031. The inauguration took place under tight security due to the discontent of citizens who took to the streets of Caracas, accusing Maduro of usurping power.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga, in his statement released through the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed that Ukraine supports the EU's position.
“The so-called 'inauguration' of Nicolas Maduro was a fiction. The choice of the Venezuelan people was stolen. We will continue to support the Venezuelan people,” Sibiga said.
He emphasized that Ukraine will continue to advocate for the rights and freedoms of citizens, calling for the maintenance of democratic standards in Venezuela.
In addition to Ukraine and the EU, the United States has also condemned Maduro's actions. A number of sanctions have been imposed against Venezuela and its leader. Washington has even offered a reward for the arrest of Maduro, who is accused of crimes against humanity.
The international community continues to call for the restoration of democracy in Venezuela. The mass protests against Maduro demonstrate that the people of the country are ready to fight for their rights, and Ukraine's position demonstrates its readiness to support democratic values on the global stage.
