This was announced by the head of Naftogaz, Oleksiy Chernyshov.
The Minister of Energy previously stated that Ukraine is close to becoming self-sufficient in gas in 2024.
This winter, Ukraine used only domestically produced gas.
“The first day of spring. This means that we have gone through the winter completely on Ukrainian gas! A historic event. 10 years ago, no one would have believed it. 2 years ago, when a full-scale war began, it was also hard to believe. But we did it and plan to continue supporting the trend of Ukraine's energy independence. I am proud and thank the Ukrainian gas workers who made this possible,” he wrote.
In fact, this “historical event” is explained simply.
After February 24, 2022, Ukraine lost large territories where hundreds of thousands and millions of people lived, as well as energy-intensive production. Energy-intensive production also sharply decreased in the controlled territory. That is, there was a collapse in gas consumption.
But at the same time, Ukraine retained control over almost all gas fields (and the largest of them are located in the Kharkiv and Poltava regions).
This allowed us to completely cover our needs with our own gas.
