Ukraine has tested the readiness to launch the Unified Center for Identification of Bodies (Remains) of Unidentified Persons Killed as a Result of Armed Aggression by the Russian Federation. The center is built according to modern standards of forensic medical examination and will become part of the nationwide system of forensic medical institutions of the Ministry of Health.
According to Deputy Minister of Health Igor Kopac, the new center will improve the processes of body identification and ensure high standards of expertise. "The opening of the National Identification Center is an important step in strengthening the state's potential to conduct comprehensive and highly accurate research in the most difficult cases," he noted.
The center was created to increase the state's capabilities in identifying those killed during the war and in the post-war period. According to Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Leonid Tymchenko, the premises have been equipped with workplaces for investigators, police forensic experts, and criminal investigation officers.
If necessary, specialists from the State Scientific-Research Expert-Forensic Center and representatives of the Secretariat of the Commissioner for Missing Persons will be involved in the work. Necessary conditions have been created for international organizations - the International Commission on Missing Persons and the International Committee of the Red Cross - to work together with Ukrainian experts.
The Ministry of Health recalls that the creation of the Center is part of a broader reform of the forensic medical system. Since 2023, regional forensic medical examination bureaus have been centralized and transferred to the ministry's management.
