Ukrzaliznytsia was the target of a large-scale and multi-level cyberattack that disrupted the company's online systems. Despite this, train traffic was not disrupted and is running according to schedule.
The attack was complex and well-planned
The press center of Ukrzaliznytsia stated that the attack was carefully organized and non-trivial, and its consequences are still being eliminated. Restoration of services began immediately after the incident and is still ongoing.
Key operational processes were successfully transferred to backup mode, which avoided critical disruptions in train operations.
This was reported by the press center of Ukrzaliznytsia, noting that the attack was carefully planned and non-trivial.
Despite the attack, key operational processes were put into backup mode, which avoided disruptions in train traffic. Ukrzaliznytsia specialists, together with the SBU cyber department, are working on a full restoration of the systems.
“The railway continues to operate despite physical attacks on the infrastructure, and even the most vile cyberattacks cannot stop it! Thanks to the implemented reservation protocols, we have maintained the stability of transportation,” the company noted.
Due to the complexity of the attack and its multi-stage nature, before launching online services, specialists check them for possible vulnerabilities.
How ticket sales work now
Due to the unavailability of online systems, Ukrzaliznytsia has switched to alternative methods of issuing travel documents:
- Tickets are sold exclusively at ticket offices. For the convenience of passengers, ticket office operations have been strengthened and service schedules have been expanded.
- International tickets for March 24 and 25 are also available at the box office, although they were usually only available online.
- If a passenger does not have time to buy a ticket at the ticket office, he can board the train without a ticket. Train crews are instructed to issue a ticket directly in the carriage.
The company also appealed to passengers planning to travel after the morning flights on March 25 to refrain from storming the ticket offices today. Priority service is provided to those who have a trip in the coming days.
“As soon as online services are restored, we will immediately inform passengers,” Ukrzaliznytsia emphasized.
Passengers who want to return tickets for trains departing on March 24 can do so online. To do this, you need to send a scan or clear photo of the ticket along with a contact phone number to [email protected] . The application will be considered within three days after the system is restored.
