In July 2025, Ukraine significantly increased the volume of natural gas imports, mainly of Russian origin, through the territories of Hungary and Slovakia. This is evidenced by operational data on the supply of energy resources.
Gas imports from Hungary increased by 13% to 300 million cubic meters, and from Slovakia by 140% to 268 million cubic meters. The main source of fuel for both countries is Russian gas, supplied through the TurkStream gas pipeline.
Overall, in July, the volume of natural gas imports to Ukraine increased by 54% and amounted to about 820 million cubic meters. Of these, almost 70% are deliveries from Hungary and Slovakia, which purchase gas from Russia.
This creates a contradictory situation: on the one hand, Ukraine calls on EU countries to stop importing Russian energy, and on the other, it itself continues to receive Russian gas through European intermediaries.
The issue of dependence on energy from Russia remains sensitive and causes criticism both within the country and among international partners. At the same time, the government has repeatedly emphasized that importing gas from Europe does not mean direct purchases from Russia, but in the case of Hungary and Slovakia, the source of the energy is obvious.
