The petitioner points to the fact that countries with nuclear weapons often enjoy greater support in international affairs. He notes that the current security situation in Ukraine, in particular the war with Russia, requires new approaches to strengthening defense capabilities. In his opinion, nuclear weapons can be a factor that will allow Ukraine to better protect its interests and national security.
“It's no secret that in this world, only the strong are reckoned with. There are many examples in world history when the support of partners depends on whether you have nuclear potential. A country does not have to use this potential. But you will be reckoned with,” the petition says.
The author notes that the countries that signed the Budapest Memorandum are not fully fulfilling their obligations, fearing escalation with Russia (because it has nuclear weapons).
As of now, the petition has received 501 votes, out of the 25,000 needed.
“Another example is Israel. Why does the US not only support it with weapons but also take part in the conflict in the Middle East? Israel is a nuclear country! I ask you to support the creation of nuclear weapons by Ukraine. There will be no greater escalation than what is happening in Ukraine now. We must become a strong and independent country,” the petition states.
The Center for Countering Disinformation has denied information about Ukraine's alleged plans to restore its nuclear arsenal.
