Ukraine must prepare for cooperation with the new American president, regardless of who the US population elects during the presidential election. Valeriy Chaly, former Ambassador of Ukraine to the US and Chairman of the Board of the Ukrainian Crisis Media Center, stated this in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.
According to Chaly, Ukraine should not expect easier cooperation with President Kamala Harris compared to Donald Trump. He noted that it would be a big mistake to assume that the people surrounding Trump will remain in their positions in the White House. “This is not so. There will be a transition team that will form new balances and take into account the circumstances, including Congress,” the ex-ambassador explained.
Chaly also pointed out that Harris’s team consists of people who previously worked with Barack Obama. “Those who were on her team before were very difficult to work with. I worked with them, and they did not want to help Ukraine with lethal weapons. It was an impenetrable wall,” he noted. However, the ex-ambassador noted that there have been changes in Harris: “Out of 47 people on her staff, 44 no longer work with her.”.
In the context of the election, a new poll from American University found that Donald Trump is trailing Kamala Harris among female voters who are more likely to support her agenda, particularly on the economy. At the same time, Trump's wife, Melania, appeared to disagree with her husband on abortion, emphasizing her support for a woman's right to control her own body.
Thus, Ukraine needs to carefully prepare for possible changes in US foreign policy in order to work effectively with new administrations regardless of their political views.
