The cyber police have exposed a 35-year-old resident of Poltava region, who is suspected of large-scale unauthorized interference in the work of an international hosting company. According to the investigation, since 2018, the man has been hacking into customer accounts, deploying virtual machines on them, and using the servers' capacity for cryptocurrency mining.
Law enforcement officers determined that the person involved gained unauthorized access to over 5,000 accounts. As a result of his actions, the company suffered losses in the amount of about 4.5 million US dollars, which is equivalent to approximately 185 million hryvnias.
To conceal his activities, the attacker constantly changed his place of residence, moving between Poltava, Odessa, Zaporizhia, and Dnipropetrovsk regions. During the searches, law enforcement officers seized computer equipment, cryptocurrency wallets, scripts for remote mining control, as well as evidence of activity on specialized hacker forums.
The criminal case is being investigated under Part 5 of Article 361 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (unauthorized interference with the operation of computer systems, which led to serious consequences). The suspect faces up to 15 years in prison. Investigative actions are ongoing.
