Ukraine supports the Iranian people, but not the current political regime of the Islamic Republic. This position was voiced by Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga against the backdrop of a sharp escalation of the situation around Iran after large-scale military strikes on the country.
According to the Foreign Minister, the Ukrainian position remains unchanged regarding the authorities in Tehran.
" The Iranian regime has been terrorizing the region for decades, supporting and financing terrorism and militants who bring instability to other countries, and abusing its own people. Therefore, we are always on the side of the Iranian people ," said Sibigha.
The statement came after the US and Israel carried out coordinated airstrikes on Iranian military and government facilities, including in Tehran, on February 28. According to international media, the explosions occurred near government institutions and facilities related to the country's military infrastructure. The operation was described as an attempt to destroy Iran's missile and military capabilities and to curb its nuclear program.
Iran responded by launching missile and drone attacks on Israeli territory, which prompted the introduction of emergency security measures and airspace closures in a number of countries in the region.
The escalation comes against the backdrop of a deep internal crisis in Iran itself. In late 2025 and early 2026, the country was gripped by large-scale anti-government protests sparked by an economic crisis, a falling national currency, and rising prices. The protests quickly escalated into clashes with security forces and became the largest anti-government demonstrations in decades.
International organizations and Western countries have previously accused the Iranian authorities of brutally suppressing protests, using military weapons against demonstrators, and carrying out mass arrests.
Against this background, the current conflict is viewed by analysts as the potential beginning of a broader confrontation in the Middle East, which could affect the global security situation and energy markets.
