According to information provided by the newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Germany can no longer finance new military aid to Ukraine. The reason for this was internal disputes in the German government. As reported by BILD, the German Ministry of Finance stated that it is ready to consider the possibility of providing additional funds in the short term, but only on the condition that clear and transparent data about the needs will be provided. At the moment, the Ministry of Finance has not received specific reports on material needs, so it cannot make a decision.
Government sources blame Chancellor Olaf Scholz for the crisis. According to them, his office "forbade" the Ministry of Defense to send prepared financial demands to the Ministry of Finance.
The Ministry of Defense blames financiers for the problem. According to the military, because of them, "more than 30 measures, which were of high priority for Ukraine, for a total amount of more than 3 billion euros, cannot be implemented." According to BILD, as early as mid-May, the Ministry of Defense requested "excessive expenses" for Ukraine this year in the amount of 3.87 billion euros. Among them, 1.3 billion for spare parts, 600 million for artillery ammunition, and 0.5 billion for drones and armored vehicles. Whatever the outcome of the dispute within the government, damage to Ukraine can hardly be prevented. According to BILD, a significant part of the materials required for the requested deliveries in May has already been sold and is not available for Ukraine this year.
