The National Antarctic Science Center (NASC) has joined the large POLARIN project, which was announced on March 1, within the framework of the Horizon Europe program of the European Union. This was reported in the press service of the National Academy of Sciences.
50 organizations from different countries, including the EU, Chile, Canada, the USA, Great Britain and others, are participating in the project. Coordination is carried out by the Alfred Wegener Institute in Germany.
This project envisages the unification of 64 scientific infrastructures in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, which will become available to all participants. These infrastructures include research stations, ships, observatories, repositories and databases.
The main goal of the project is to support interdisciplinary research in both polar regions with the aim of solving global problems, in particular, climate problems. Polar regions are known to be the first to respond to changes in the environment.
Ukraine joined the project with the help of the icebreaker "Noosphere" and the Antarctic station "Akademik Vernadskyi". NASC will actively participate in POLARIN during 2024-2025. In general, the project is designed for 5 years with a budget of 14.6 million euros, of which more than half a million euros are intended for Ukraine.
