Ukrainian refugees in the UK face increasing difficulties in finding skilled work

Many Ukrainian refugees are highly qualified and experienced in their professions, but they are forced to work in less skilled positions. Reasons for this include language barriers, the need to verify diplomas and certificates, and limited opportunities in the labor market.

“It’s very difficult to find a job in our field right now. Most of us are forced to take any job to support ourselves and our families,” says Olena, a doctor from Ukraine who now works at the checkout in a supermarket in London.

Deterioration of the labor market

The British job market is in a slowdown. According to Bloomberg, the unemployment rate has risen and the number of vacancies has fallen. This creates additional difficulties for refugees trying to find work.

Visa expiration approaching

Another problem is that the visas issued to Ukrainian refugees are about to expire. Many of them are unsure about their future, as uncertainty about their future status in the UK hinders long-term planning and finding stable employment.

“I don’t know what will happen next. Will our visas be extended, or will we have to return home? It’s very scary,” shares Andriy, an engineer from Ukraine.

Reducing support

The general interest in helping Ukrainian refugees is gradually decreasing. They initially received significant support from the British government and local communities, but now this support is decreasing. This makes it difficult for them to integrate and find suitable employment.

Analysts point to the need to implement programs to retrain and adapt Ukrainian refugees to the requirements of the British labor market. It is also important to consider extending the validity of visas to give them more time to integrate.

Call to action

At the moment, many Ukrainian refugees continue to struggle for their place in the UK job market, hoping for support from the government and local communities to overcome these challenges. It is important that the British authorities and the international community do not forget about them and provide the necessary assistance.
