Ukrainian developers have introduced a free browser extension "Font Cutter", which automatically identifies Russian fonts on web pages and offers to replace them with alternatives of Ukrainian or international origin.
The tool works directly in the browser: it scans the active tab and labels fonts by origin. Russian fonts are highlighted in red, while Ukrainian or neutral fonts are highlighted in green. The user then receives replacement recommendations along with instructions for installing alternatives.
The extension already supports working with websites and integrates with the Canva graphic editor. According to the project team, the problem of the spread of Russian fonts remains relevant, as large platforms, including Google Fonts and Canva, often offer them as standard variants of “Cyrillic” fonts. As a result, businesses and government agencies may unknowingly use such fonts in their materials.
The Font Cutter database allows you to recognize almost 1,300 fonts associated with Russian authors or studios. More than 320 alternatives have already been prepared for replacement, including works by Ukrainian designers and international studios.
The project was implemented by the public organization "Ukraine in Color" in cooperation with the Rentafont platform. The extension is available for download in the Chrome Web Store.
The developers plan to expand the functionality of the service. In particular, in the future, Font Cutter may appear in Google Docs and Google Sheets, as well as integrate with popular AI tools and design platforms.
