Volodymyr Zelensky's term of office actually ends on May 20, 2024. The planned presidential elections were to be held at the end of March, but due to the martial law imposed in the country, the parliament did not schedule them. Ukrainian society is considering the question of further leadership of the country after the end of Zelensky's current five-year term as president.
Currently, many experts believe that Zelensky will remain in power until the next presidential election, as the Constitution of Ukraine stipulates that the president's term ends only with the election of a new candidate. Additionally, the martial law imposed in the country prevents any elections from being held.
Some individuals, such as veteran politicians, are suggesting that Zelensky voluntarily step down from the presidency in May 2024. However, there are parties that support the current leadership, believing that Zelensky's power is legitimate and based on the support of citizens.
At the same time, most lawyers believe that the decision on further steps should be made by the Constitutional Court. However, so far none of the key players has initiated consideration of this issue in court. The opposition also supports the decision not to go to court and to adhere to the agreement not to hold elections until the end of martial law.
