Ukrainian polar explorers have recorded a rare natural phenomenon — complete calm in the area of the Antarctic station “Akademik Vernadsky”. This unique phenomenon, which occurs rarely, is striking in its beauty: frozen water and air, together with ice blocks, create a fantastic effect.
According to the National Antarctic Science Center, the calm observed near the Ukrainian polar station located on Galindez Island is an extremely rare phenomenon. The island, located in the Southern Ocean, is part of the Argentine group of islands of the Wilhelm Archipelago.
This incredible moment was captured by Tetyana Baglai, a biologist of the 29th Ukrainian Arctic Expedition, during a working trip by boat. She shared her impressions of this phenomenon: “In this area of Antarctica, strong winds constantly blow, often with precipitation. But when there is a lull, you can take incredibly beautiful photos in the ocean. The world around you seems to stop, and the huge icebergs, clouds, and mountains of the continent are fantastically reflected in the mirror of the water.”
