After months of tension, the Ukrainian military has finally launched a counterattack near Pokrovsk, pushing the front line back several miles and improving the city's chances of holding on. This development could significantly change the course of the war in the region.
According to Forbes, Ukrainian observers indicate that the reasons for the retreat of the Tavria operational-strategic group east of Pokrovsk were previously not only insufficient forces, but also the lack of proper fortifications. This confirms the view that the transfer of additional brigades to the Pokrovsk direction could have a significant impact.
In particular, the Kara-Dag National Guard Brigade, the 12th Azov Brigade, and the 93rd Mechanized Brigade have been involved in the counterattacks. While these attacks have not yet led to any major changes, their main goal is to slow down Russian offensives and prepare for possible winter combat conditions.
The high terrain around Pokrovsk creates additional difficulties for the attackers. The operations of the Kara-Dag brigade in Selidove, located southeast of Pokrovsk, are particularly important. The brigade's T-64 tanks have already managed to inflict significant damage on Russian tanks and combat vehicles trying to break through to Selidove.
According to the assessment of the Ukrainian Center for Defense Strategies, the upcoming battle for Pokrovsk could be the culmination of the enemy's offensive operation on the southwestern front. Without control of Selidovo, the Russians will not be able to ensure stability in their offensive on Pokrovsk.
