On the popular tourist island of Bali, Ukrainian Roman Nazarenko was sentenced to life in prison for running a drug lab, Al Jazeera reports.
According to the investigation, citizens of Ukraine and Russia were involved in the production and sale of drugs. Despite the military conflict between the countries, they acted together in criminal activities in Indonesia.
Nazarenko was arrested in December 2024 at Bangkok airport while trying to fly to Dubai. After his arrest, he was extradited to Indonesia. He was wanted for seven months after searches of his villa in Bali, where police discovered a laboratory in the basement for growing marijuana and producing ecstasy.
The Ukrainian claims that he was tricked into joining a criminal group, but Indonesian courts found him guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
The case attracted international media attention due to the unique participation of citizens of countries at war in a joint drug trade on the territory of a third country.
