Ukrainian Defense Forces have successfully shot down a Russian guided aerial bomb (GAB), military correspondent Andriy Tsaplienko reported, citing sources in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
“According to preliminary data, we are talking about experimental weapons,” Tsaplienko noted.
The Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed the shooting down of a guided bomb in Zaporizhia, but emphasized that this is not the first time this has happened, which Andriy Tsaplienko emphasized in his message.
“This is not the first time that such a type of air attack vehicle as a KAB has been shot down. Combat work is underway on various targets – missiles, drones, including KABs. Because KABs come in different types,” Yuriy Ignat, head of the communications department of the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, noted in a comment to UNIAN.
At the same time, he emphasized that countering the enemy's use of CBMs requires a comprehensive approach, not just fighting the ammunition itself.
“It is necessary to counter the enemy’s tactical aviation, which actually launches these KABs. In just 24 years, the enemy has launched up to 40 thousand guided aerial bombs across Ukraine. The Air Force is currently actively implementing a comprehensive approach to countering the use of KABs by enemy tactical aviation. Various methods of counteraction are being used,” Ignat added.
The threat of Russian KABs to Ukraine
Earlier, military expert Igor Romanenko explained how Ukraine is solving the problem of Russian KABs. According to him, the F-16 fighters that Ukraine received have characteristics that do not allow them to shoot down enemy KAB carriers. Therefore, Ukraine remains with a working method of combating Russian KABs, namely, the task of striking ground targets, including drones.
It was also reported that in early January the enemy dropped three KABs on Kherson, as a result of which houses were destroyed, and many people were injured. After the use of such weapons by the occupiers in the city, there was significant destruction, in particular, residential buildings were destroyed, the blast wave broke out gates, window frames, glass panes, ceilings, walls collapsed, and people's property was destroyed.
