A wave of lawsuits is ongoing in Ukraine, with natural gas consumers at the center of the lawsuits. People are being sent bills for tens, and sometimes hundreds, of thousands of hryvnias. In most cases, such additional charges are related to damaged seals, “suspicious” meters, or even accusations of unauthorized connection to the gas pipeline. For many Ukrainians, this has come as a real shock.
One of the most high-profile cases involved a resident of Poltava region, who was fined 404 thousand hryvnias for an allegedly illegal pipe. The man explained that the gas did not pass through the pipe, but the court decided otherwise. Another case occurred in Kharkiv, where a consumer was ordered to pay 18 thousand hryvnias due to a damaged seal, even though there was no evidence of tampering with the meter. Such stories scare people and raise numerous questions about justice.
Gas companies often cite technical defects in meters, even if they did not affect the readings. For example, a crack in the glass or glue residue from a seal can be grounds for additional charges for the maximum possible gas consumption. This means that a person is billed as if they had used gas 24/7 for several months or even years.
However, judicial practice shows that consumers have a chance to defend their rights. If inspection reports are drawn up with violations, and examinations are carried out without following the procedure, the decisions of gas companies can be canceled. In some cases, courts declare additional charges invalid due to the lack of specific evidence of violations. This gives hope to those who do not agree to pay unreasonable amounts.
To avoid such situations, lawyers advise consumers to closely monitor the work of gas suppliers, demand clear documentation during inspections, and not hesitate to go to court if dubious surcharges arise. In the fight for justice, it is important to know your rights, because this is the only way to protect yourself from “space” payments.
