Ukrainians spend less money compared to last year

According to the National Bank of Ukraine, the average amount of one transaction using a bank card in a retail network in the first quarter of 2024 was 327 hryvnias. This value is a significant decline compared to the same period last year, when the average check was 344 hryvnias.

The size of one card-to-card transfer transaction also decreased - in the first quarter it amounted to UAH 1,931 (compared to UAH 2,133 a year ago), according to data from the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU).

At the same time, the size of the transaction for payment for goods and services on the Internet increased to UAH 541 (UAH 460 a year ago).

Where payment cards were most used

In the first quarter of this year, the largest number of card transactions in terms of amount and quantity were made in retail stores (45.1% and 72%, respectively). There, 1.32 billion transactions were made for the amount of UAH 433.2 billion.

Card-to-card transfers accounted for a third in amount (32.9%) and almost a tenth in volume (8.9%).

Payment for goods and services online – 14.6% in terms of amount and 14.1% in terms of quantity.

In total, in the first quarter, 1.36 billion transactions were carried out within Ukraine using payment cards for a total amount of UAH 884.5 billion.

Including 111 million cash withdrawal transactions for UAH 509.3 billion. This figure remains at the level of last year (111 million transactions for UAH 501.8 billion).

At the same time, the number of payment transactions using cards increased to 1.25 billion (943.8 million in the first quarter of last year) for a total amount of UAH 375.1 billion (UAH 285.7 billion a year ago).

As reported, the amount of transactions with cards of Ukrainian banks abroad in the first quarter of 2024 amounted to UAH 77.6 billion, and the number of such transactions was 74.8 million.

At the same time, 72.8 million transactions for a total amount of UAH 58.1 billion were related to payments using payment terminals, this indicator remained at the level of the first quarter of 2023.

The remaining 2.3 million transactions were related to cash withdrawals from Ukrainian cards abroad for a total of UAH 19.5 billion. This figure decreased almost 4 times in number and three times in amount.
