By the end of 2024, Ukraine will probably not be able to achieve the goal of building 1 GW of new generation capacity, which was previously announced by President Volodymyr Zelenskyi. This assessment was voiced by the head of the National Energy and Utilities Regulatory Commission (NKREKP) Valery Tarasyuk in an interview with Forbes.
According to Tarasyuk, it will be difficult to reach the target volume of 1 GW of new capacities, but the situation looks encouraging, because many investors are implementing projects for the construction of small power plants.
In order to speed up the development of new energy capacities, NKREKP simplified the connection conditions and reduced the cost for new power plants. Tarasyuk emphasized that the commission is ready to individually support each project, helping to solve any problems arising from Oblenergo and Ukrenergo.
The head of the NKRECP also noted that distributed gas generation is a controlled process, therefore, one should not expect an excessive increase in capacity that exceeds the system's capabilities. Gas-fired power plants are typically run to cover peak loads, when the cost of electricity is highest. However, on average, the cost of electricity during a day, month or year should remain at an acceptable level, Tarasyuk clarified.
