Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko announced that Ukraine expects to achieve self-sufficiency in gas through its own production as early as 2024. He shared this information during an interview, emphasizing that the country is close to achieving a zero gas balance this year.
According to the minister, gas consumption decreased by approximately 19 billion cubic meters last year. Galushchenko noted that this decrease is due to a sharp decline in consumption, and stressed the importance of developing the industry and the economy to further reduce dependence on gas imports.
The Minister also shared the Ministry of Energy's plans for 2024, indicating that Ukraine, together with the United States and other allies, plans to begin construction of large units for nuclear power plants. This project is planned to be launched this year.
Additionally, Ukraine plans to begin construction of four new nuclear reactors at the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant to compensate for the losses of energy capacity noted in connection with the conflict with Russia.
