Ukraine has decided to withdraw Abrams tanks provided to it by the United States to the rear because of the threat posed to them by drones used by Russian forces, according to information provided to the Associated Press by two US military officials.
“These weapons have made it difficult for Ukraine to protect its tanks when they are quickly detected and pursued by Russian drones or shells. Five of the 31 tanks have already been lost to Russian attacks,” the agency writes.
Now the US will work with the Ukrainians on a “tactics reset.” In particular, because the Ukrainian Armed Forces “have not adopted tactics that could make tanks more effective.”.
The Americans tried to teach the Ukrainians to use the Abrams in combined arms warfare, where tanks operate as part of an offensive system that includes artillery, infantry, and aviation.
“However, Ukraine has used them only limitedly since then and has not made all-out war part of its operations, a Pentagon official said,” the article said, adding that the tanks were brought into action during the retreat from Avdiivka.
