The Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olga Stefanishyna recently gave a clear explanation regarding the process of Ukraine's accession to NATO.
In an interview with RBC-Ukraine, she confirmed that the question of membership in the Alliance will be considered exclusively within the borders of Ukraine as of 1991, and other formats will not be discussed.
Stefanyshyn explained that Ukraine does not plan to offer alternative solutions or territorial compromises regarding its NATO membership until the allies make their proposals. She emphasized that at this stage the Allies should decide on Ukraine's membership in the Alliance without any restrictions or territorial redistributions.
"We will listen to all allies, conduct negotiations with each of the 32 NATO member states, but we will not ask questions about any restrictions or redistribution in the matter of NATO membership," Stefanishyna said. She added that Ukraine within the borders of 1991 is a sovereign and independent country that aspires to join NATO within its internationally recognized borders.
Stefanyshyn also emphasized that at the stage when it comes to the ratification of the decision to recognize Ukraine as a member of NATO, the process will be open and public. She noted that currently there is no format for discussing possible restrictions or redistribution of territories in the context of Ukraine's accession to the Alliance.
Thus, Ukraine's position on NATO membership is unambiguous and clear - the country will join the Alliance within its borders, established in 1991, without any changes or compromises.
