At the checkpoint "Vadul-Srate" on the border with Ukraine, Romanian border guards found an attempt to illegally import a large amount of cash. The couple of Ukrainians tried to walk 1.4 million dollars to Romania, gluing them to the body with adhesive tape.
According to Romania border guards, the incident happened on the evening of June 14. The 49-year-old citizen of Ukraine and his 39-year-old wife, who has a double-Ukrainian-Romanian-citizenship, tried to check, but raised suspicion of customs staff. After a thorough inspection, it turned out that the man hid $ 810,000 and a woman - $ 590 thousand.
None of the sums was declared, which is a direct violation of Romania's legislation. According to the current rules, the import of more than 10 thousand euros without written declaration is prohibited and provides for strict sanctions.
Violators were fined 15 thousand lei each (approximately UAH 138 thousand) and withdrew all cash. The case was transferred to the competent authorities for further consideration.
This incident is not the first time an attempt to move large sums across the border. In September 2024, the Polish customs officers detained a citizen of Ukraine who transported $ 355,000 and $ 46,000 in a suitcase, traveling by Kiev -Peremysl train.
Customs services of EU countries are again reminiscent that any amount of more than 10 thousand euros (or equivalent in another currency) should be declared when crossing the border, otherwise the money may be confiscated and the offender will be fined.
