Cyber police exposed a 35-year-old resident of Poltava region, who is suspected of large-scale unauthorized interference with the work of an international hosting company. According to the investigation, since 2018 the man has broken customer accounts, launched virtual machines and used the capacity of servers for cryptocurrency mining.
Law enforcement officers found that the person involved in unauthorized access to more than 5 thousand accounts. As a result of his actions, the company has caused losses worth about $ 4.5 million, which is equivalent to about UAH 185 million.
To conceal the activity, the attacker constantly changed his place of residence, moving between Poltava, Odessa, Zaporizhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions. During the searches, law enforcement officers seized computer equipment, cryptocurrency wallets, scripts for remote management of mining, as well as evidence of activity at specialized hacker forums.
Criminal proceedings are investigated under Part 5 of Art. 361 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (unauthorized interference with computer systems, which led to grave consequences). The suspect faces up to 15 years in prison. Investigative actions are ongoing.
